Year 11 - GCSE Separate Science (9-1)

GCSEs: Biology B, Chemistry B, and Physics B (9-1) OCR 21st Century Science:

Specifications: J257 (Biology), J258 (Chemistry) and J259 (Physics)

Students taking this course will obtain three GCSE grades.

For the Triple or Separate Science courses, practical work is embedded in all the topics, and is a large part of understanding the content. All practical skills (PAGs) will be assessed in the final exams.

Science Department’s GCSE Parent’s Portal: https://sites.google.com/view/ricardslodge-gcse/home

Each GCSE course in Biology, Chemistry and Physics are available as:
Higher ( grades 9 to 4) or Foundation (grades 5 to 1)

The expectation at Ricards Lodge would be that all students entered on the Separate Science course would be expected to achieve on the Higher qualification.

GCSE Biology B (9-1) OCR 21st Century Science: Specification J257:

Two written papers, which are fully synoptic: Depth and Breadth
Each of 1 hour 45 minutes in duration and totalling 50% of the final grade.

• Chapter B1: You and your genes

• Chapter B2: Keeping healthy

• Chapter B3: Living together – food and ecosystems

• Chapter B4: Using food and controlling growth

• Chapter B5: The human body – staying alive

• Chapter B6: Life on Earth – past, present and future

GCSE Chemistry B (9-1) OCR 21st Century Science: Specification J258

Two written papers, which are fully synoptic: Depth and Breadth
Each of 1 hour 45 minutes in duration and totalling 50% of the final grade.

• Chapter C1: Air and water

• Chapter C2: Chemical patterns

• Chapter C3: Chemicals of the natural environment

• Chapter C4: Material choices

• Chapter C5: Chemical analysis

• Chapter C6: Making useful chemicals

GCSE Physics B (9-1) OCR 21st Century Science: Specification J259

Two written papers, which are fully synoptic: Depth and Breadth
Each of 1 hour 45 minutes in duration and totalling 50% of the final grade.

• Chapter P1: Radiation and waves

• Chapter P2: Sustainable energy

• Chapter P3: Electric circuits

• Chapter P4: Explaining motion

• Chapter P5: Radioactive materials

• Chapter P6: Matter – models and explanations

Each of the papers will also assess ‘Ideas about Science’ and ‘Practical Skills’—PAGs—that the students have carried out over the 3-year course.

A Parent’s Portal website is available, which is administered and updated by the Science team. This website contains resources for student revision and skills support.  https://sites.google.com/view/ricardslodge-gcse/home

Final Assessment Overview

The pace of the course is brisk and a large volume of material is covered in each term.
Students are expected to carry out independent study weekly and to ensure that they keep on top of the content, lesson to lesson. This is reflected in the raised entry requirements for the course.

The Separate Sciences will benefit those students wishing to pursue Higher Education courses within medicine, pharmacy, veterinary studies, engineering, pharmaceutics, data analytics, computing amongst many other choices. GCSE Biology, Physics and Chemistry provides the opportunity to further develop understanding of scientific explanations, how science works and an appreciation for relevant careers in Science.

Post-16 Progression

GCSE Separate Science provides distinct and relevant experience for learners who wish to progress to Level 3 qualifications, such as A-level Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Level 3 BTEC Health and Social Care which are available at RR6.
