The transition from primary to secondary school is important in the lives of children and their families. At Ricards Lodge High School we have a robust system to ensure all students will have a successful transition and to help students and parents minimise anxiety about the change.
We want all students who choose Ricards Lodge High School to get used to their new routines and school organisation with great ease; develop new friendships and improve their self-esteem and confidence. By providing a wider choice of subjects, we intend to extend their interest in school and school work.
We aim to enrich students’ learning experience in secondary education by providing them with opportunities and challenges, along with the practical skills and knowledge to be confident in fully accessing these post-transition.
We will ensure that students will have the tools and emotional resilience to manage this transition. We will make sure all students will continue to make academic progress, to achieve and to enjoy learning. As a result, students’ motivation, positive attitudes and self-image as learners are maintained and developed.
Once you have received a confirmation letter from the Local Authority, we will send you a Welcome Letter which includes all general school information, key dates for meetings and uniform.
During the summer term we invite parents/carers and their daughters for a face to face interview so that we can get to know our families and ensure a smooth transition to Year 7. During this time we work closely with her primary school to share information on her performance. An induction day takes place soon after when they get to meet all the girls in their year group and become familiar with our surroundings.
If you have any questions about the transition process to Ricards Lodge please do not hesitate to contact the school.
Induction Workshop Afternoon
We will host an induction workshop at the beginning of the Summer term to help support your daughter in her SAT tests. The workshops are always very well subscribed and are held in English, Mathematics or Science. The workshops also give girls their first opportunity to meet not only other girls who will be joining Ricards Lodge High School but also the staff who will be supporting your daughters over the coming years.
All girls are invited for a personalised interview with their parents and carers. This gives us the chance to develop our relationship with all our families which we consider so important if our students are to be successful whilst at Ricards Lodge High School.
On Saturday 9th June 2018, your daughter will assessed in Mathematics and English. The results of the assessments along with data received from your daughters’ Year 6 teachers help us to allocate your daughter to the most appropriate Learning Group (set), so that we can ensure she maintains a love of learning and develops her full potential.
Your daughter will also be allocated to a mixed ability Tutor Group. All students remain with their tutor for their first five years at Ricards Lodge High School.
The Induction Day will be held on Wednesday 4th July 2018. On the Induction Day students will be able to meet the Headteacher and staff. There will be taster lessons and it is an opportunity for students to make new friends. Our Inclusion department and a member of the Senior Leadership Team will also work closely with your daughter’s primary school to obtain relevant information to support your child’s learning.
During the Autumn term we run a number of transition groups where girls are in small groups to support anyone who might find the transition process difficult. This gives girls an opportunity to talk to a mentor and develop their self-esteem and confidence.
