Learn with the Lords

Baroness Hamwee visits Ricards Lodge High School

Students from Ricards Lodge High School in Wimbledon were delighted to have the honor of hosting a special visit from Baroness Hamwee, a respected member of the House of Lords, as part of an initiative to bring parliamentary democracy to life for its students, as part of the popular ‘Learn with the Lords’ programme.

In the voice of our students;

"Baroness Hamwee gave a very good insight into what it would be like when the House of Lords work on a bill which I found very interesting, and she also discussed how her past experience of being a solicitor helps her in her everyday life as a baroness."

- Amira, Year 12

"Your voice can make a difference truly if you know the right words to say and when to say it."

- Nina, Year 8

"Baroness Hamwee said that we should always give something a try, even if you don't know where it could take you. It is important that we take every opportunity possible."

- Annie, Year 7

Baroness Hamwee has been a member of the House of Lords since 6th June 1991.

A Liberal Democrat politician and the Lead Home Affairs Spokesperson in the House of Lords. She is a Life Peer and former chair of the London Assembly. Since April 2021 she has chaired the Justice and Home Affairs Select Committee.

During her insightful visit, Baroness Hamwee provided a clear and engaging explanation of the crucial functions performed by the House of Lords. The students learned about the Upper Chamber's role in the passing of laws, highlighting how it scrutinises and revises legislation initiated in the House of Commons.

Student Q&A Session:

The highlight of the visit was the interactive question-and-answer session. Students seized the opportunity to engage directly with Baroness Hamwee, asking thoughtful and challenging questions that covered everything from the processes of legislative reform to the practicalities of a political career. The visit successfully provided the students with a first-hand understanding of parliamentary procedure and the diverse roles within the UK's legislative system, inspiring the next generation of engaged citizens and potential political leaders.

"It was fantastic to see our students apply their learning and confidently question a member of the House of Lords. Experiences like this are invaluable for promoting active citizenship and encouraging our young women to understand and engage with the institutions that shape our society."

- Kate Page, Headteacher

Our school would like to say a big Thank You to Baroness Hamwee for being a real-life example and inspiration to our students who ASPIRE to be successful women of the future.
