Ricards STEAM Club

The STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and maths) Club has been running all year for Year 7’s after school on a Thursday. This club has undertaken a variety of projects in each department from science experiments, making rockets, creating different structures and much more.

In maths, the first session looked at the amazing work undertaken by Katherine Johnson, Mary Jackson and Dorothy Vaughan with clips from the film Hidden Figures. We discussed the problems facing NASA and looked into the physics of forces on a glider, even creating our own from paper to see how it would fly. Students loved this challenge and were excited to go home and watch the film too!

Across the year, the curious group have also taken part in team challenges. The two main challenges were: looking at building a tower out of marshmallows and spaghetti (rather messy but very fun!) and the other attempting to outsmart a zombie by designing a soundproof shoe. The projects really allowed the students to work their creativity alongside some engineering, and they all left wanting to know what would come next.
