Dance is an exciting and vibrant addition to the Performing Arts department at Ricards Lodge High School. Every student in Year 7, 8 and 9 participates in a weekly dance lesson.
At Key Stage 4 students have the opportunity to continue Dance as part of the BTEC Level 1/2 First Award in Performing Arts. The skills learnt in studying a BTEC First will aid progression for further study and prepare learners to enter the workplace in due course.
Ricards are also very excited to now offer our students the opportunity to study dance as part of the BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma at RR6. There is a strong focus on performing in this course and learning activities will be based around developing their technical skills, understanding and creativity. Assessment will be through assignments in class, written work and practical/performance projects. Key stage 5 students also have the opportunity to lead extra curricular sessions for the younger students.
Students have the opportunity to experience many different dance styles from different eras and will develop an awareness of the historical and cultural origins of different dances throughout all key stages.
The Dance department aims to produce students who have an appreciation of well crafted, imaginative and innovative dance as well as having the skills to develop their own ideas and choreography.
There are extensive extra curricular options in the Dance Department with students having the opportunity to attend lunchtime Street Dance, Jazz Dance and Choreography Clubs. The Dance Department also runs an after school project with The Royal Academy of Dance called ‘Step into Dance’, funded by the Jack Petchy Foundation. It is a fully inclusive open access dance programme that aims to widen participation in dance in secondary school students aged between 11-16 years old. Students in Key Stage 4 and 5 have the opportunity to take part in a variety of workshops with visiting professional artists and dance companies such as Rambert Dance Company and Matthew Bourne’s New Adventures Dance Company.
Students have many opportunities to take part in performances throughout the year. This includes whole school production, the BTEC Dance Showcase as well as celebration evening, events and assemblies.
