GCSE Drama
Syllabus Title: Drama GCSE
Exam Board: AQA
GCSE Drama aims to give students the opportunity to develop:
- Creative and imaginative powers
- Practical skills for communication and expressing ideas, feeling and meanings in drama
- Critical and analytical skills evaluating drama and mediums particularly through live theatre performance
- Collaborative and leadership skills
The subject content for GCSE Drama is divided into three components:
1. Understanding drama
- Knowledge and understanding of drama and theatre
- Study of one set play from a choice of six
- Analysis and evaluation of the work of live theatre makers
How it's assessed:
Written exam: 1 hour and 45 minutes

80 marks
40% GCSE
2. Devising drama
- Process of creating devised drama
- Performance of devised drama (students may contribute as performer or designer)
- Analysis and evaluation of own work
How it's assessed:
Devising log (60 marks)
Devising Performance (20 marks)
80 marks in total
40% of GCSE
3. Texts in practice
Performance of two extracts from one play (students may contribute as performer or designer). Free choice of play but is must contrast with the set play chosen for Component 1.
How it's assessed:
Performance of Extract 1 (20 marks) and Extract 2 (20 marks)
40 marks in total
20% of GCSE
PROGRESSION AT POST-16
Students who achieve a 5 or above on this course could take at post-16 - including those which are available at our Sixth Form RR6:
- BTEC National Extended Certificates and Diplomas in Performing Arts or Production Arts.
CAREERS
Drama can benefit students who wish to pursue a career in the arts, media, the communications industry, the law, marketing and any career which deals with the public.
