Year 11 - GCSE Combined Science (9-1)

GCSE: Combined Science B (9-1) OCR 21st Century Science:

Specification: J260

This will result in two GCSE grades and replaces the previous 21st Century (Core and Additional Science). For Combined Science, practical work is embedded in all the topics, and is a large part of understanding the content. All practical skills (PAGs) will be assessed on the final exams. The Combined Science course includes equal amounts of  study of the three sciences: Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

Combined Science - Biology:

One written paper of 1 hour 45 minutes totalling 26.4% of the final grade.

  • Chapter B1: You and your genes

  • Chapter B2: Keeping healthy 

  • Chapter B3: Living together

  • Chapter B4: Using food and controlling growth

  • Chapter B5: The human body – staying alive

  • Chapter B6: Life on Earth – past, present and future

Combined Science - Chemistry:

One written paper of 1 hour 45 minutes totalling 26.4% of the final grade.

  • Chapter C1: Air and water

  • Chapter C2: Chemical patterns 

  • Chapter C3: Chemicals of the natural

  • Chapter C4: Material choices

  • Chapter C5: Chemical analysis

  • Chapter C6: Making useful chemicals

Combined Science: Physics:

One written paper of 1 hour 45 minutes totalling 26.4% of the final grade.

  • Chapter P1: Radiation and waves                 

  • Chapter P2: Sustainable energy                   

  • Chapter P3: Electric circuits                          

  • Chapter P4: Explaining motion

  • Chapter P5: Radioactive materials

  • Chapter P6: Matter – models and explanations

A final paper entitled ‘Combined Science’ is taken at the end of Year 11. This is also 1 hour and 45 minutes in duration and totals 20.8% of the final grade for the course.

Final Assessment Overview

Post-16 Progression

GCSE Combined Science, if achieved at grade 6-6 or higher, provides progression opportunities  for learners who wish to progress to Level 3 qualifications, such as A-level Biology, Chemistry and Physics. 

If achieved at grade 4-4 or higher, learners may progress on to the BTEC Level 3 Health and Social Care course which is available at RR6.
